Maidens Tower

Maidens Tower is probably Baku’s most remarkable building, and it’s a national emblem of Azerbaijan. The tower was built in the 12th century, but some historians dates it’s origin much earlier. Different mythical stories are attached to the building. The most famous tells how a young maiden princess had the tower built as a last wish before her enforced marriage.  As a last desperate act she trows herself of the tower the night before her wedding.

However it’s more likely that the tower was built for military defense, or simply a beacon to navigate ships in the bay.
