The Gobustan-reserve is very rich in archaeological monuments. The reserve has more than 6,000 rock engravings dating back at least 5,000 years. Most of the engravings portray animals, hunting, boats and ritual dancing, or is it maybe Yalli!)) (a kind of dance style that is danced at every Azerbaijani wedding). The ship engravings captured the attention of Thor Heyerdahl because of their similarity to Scandinavian petroglyphs.
Of greater interest, at least in my opinion, is the Roman stone inscription from 84-96 AD. Carved into a rock, a kilometer or so from the petroglyphs. The Roman centurion carved the following text into the rock.
IMP(ERATORE) DOMITIOANO CAESARE AUG(USTO) GERMANIC(O) L(UCIUS) IULIUS MAXIMUS (CENTURIO) LEG(IONIS) XII FUL(MINATAE)
“The age of emperor Domitian Caesar Augustus. Germanicus Lutius Maximus centurion of the 12th instant Legion Fulminata”
This is the most eastern Roman evidence to be known.
