Well-known and unknown Swedes in Baku!
Robert came to Baku in 1873. He had been commissioned by his brother Ludwig to manufacture 500,000 rifle buttstocks. The wood to the buttstocks were thought to be found in the southern Caucasus among the walnut trees in Lenkoran, about 20 kilometers south of Baku. The walnut trees, however, were shabby and unusable. Nevertheless, at this time Baku had been caught by the gold fever, ie the “black gold”, oil fever. Robert saw the opportunities and bought a small oil refinery plus some oil parcels and started drilling for oil. Soon, Robert produced kerosene that could compete with American quality.
