About 200 German families settled in Azerbaijan in the early 19th century.
Invited by the Tsar Alexander I, they founded the cities Helenendorf (Göygöl), Annefeld (Shamkir) and several others. The settlers had left their homes in Wurttenberg to find the promised land in Caucasus. After years of hardships and pure survival, the legendary German work ethic gave results. They planted crops and produced wine, and by time they turned out to be the most prosperous villages in the land.
