Qirmizi Qesebe, (Krasnoya Sloboda)

Is sometimes called the Jerusalem of Caucasus. It’s called like this because the inhabitants are mostly Jews. Though the history of the mountain Jews is thought to go back to the Babylonian diaspora or even the Assyrian. Qirmizi Qesebe was established in the 18th century by Jews fleeing the cruelty of Nadir Shah. It became a prosperous settlement with as many as 8 000* people and 11 synagogues. However, during the Soviet time, many emigrated to Israel or the United States. Today Qirmizi Qesebe has about 4000 inhabitants. So, it’s still supposed to be the biggest Jewish “town” outside Israel.
