Xınalıq, Khinalug

The Khinalug village and the road to reach it is probably the most scenic in Azerbaijan. The village is located 2350 m above the sea level which makes it the highest and most remote village in Azerbaijan. The People living here speak the unique Khinalug language and are most certainly descendants of one of the 26 Caucasian Albanian tribes mentioned by the Greek geographer Strabo.

Khinalug is one of the oldest uninterruptedly populated places in the world. Because of its inaccessibility, it has never been raided or invaded by enemies. Today there are between 1500-2000 people living there. Most of them are shepherds. Some people own as many as 300 sheep. Customers come from the town of Quba and re-sell the animals on the market in Quba and Baku. Famous and sought-after is also the white honey produced in Khinalug. The people of Khinalug village are Sunni Muslims and there is one working mosque in the village. There is also one doctor who treats sick people either in his home or in the homes of his patients.
